The museum is devoted to all aspects of civilian shipping. The exhibitions primarely cover the shipping, shipbuilding and fishing industry of Gothenburg. The library holds more than 18.000 books.
There is also an aquarium attached to the museum.
The Friends of the Museum publishes the "yearbook" Unda Maris.
A fortress located at the entrance to the river Göta Älv. It successfully defended the city from naval attacks during the 18th and 19th centuries. The exhibits include displays on Thordenskiold, the Norwegian naval commander who led the attacks on Gothenburg, and the excavations of the 18th century Swedish East Indiaman Göteborg, which after returning from three years in China was wrecked just outside the fortress.

A naval museum located at a naval base and was moved to a new building in 1997. Attached to the museum are the following ships:
Two reconstructed vessels have been built at the museum. Aluette is based on one of the 13th century boats found at Kalmar and the 17th century mail packet Hiorten, which will be launched on June 17, 1998, is based on the original plans.
The museum also has a large collection of figure-heads which have belonged to ships of the Swedish Navy. Those made by Johan Törnström for the 1782 shipbuilding program being the most famous. Another collection of figure-heads are kept on the adjacent naval base, to which access only is through guided tours.
There are more than 20.000 books in the library, which is available after appointment.
A new museum is currently being built on the island Stumholmen partly utilising 18th century buildings. The new museum is expected to open in the spring of 1997 after having been closed from September 1996.
