Founded in Great Britain in 1981 to further research in all aspects of nautical
archaeology and to ensure the publication of the results.
It aims: to advance education in nautical archaology at all levels; to improve
techniques in reporting, excavating and conservation; to encourage participation
by members of the public at all stages.
The Society is committed to promote the protection of the underwater cultural
heritage throughout the world and to increase public appreciation of it.
Principally the Society exsists as a forum for the exchange of ideas relevant
to nautical archaeology. It seeks to bring together all those who are interested
in this field for discussion so as to secure a wide dissemination of the
knowledge gained.
The Society publishes the quarterly journal International Journal of Nautical
Archaeology [ISSN 1057-2414] in association with Academic Press and
produces a Newsletter and organizes both on its own
behalf and in association with other bodies: conferences, symposia, lectures,
organized visits, field projects and expeditions.
