The new clipper ship "Sovereign of the Seas".

THE NEW CLIPPER SHIP SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, of Boston, sailed from New York, yesterday, for San Francisco, California. The New York papers say that she has the largest cargo ever despatched from that port, amounting to about 2950 tons of assorted merchandise, exclusive of stores for a year's voyage; and also, probably, with a larger freight list than ever before cleared from the country by one vessel. She carries a crew, including officers, of 103 men and boys, exclusive of the captain -- consisting of 4 mates, a boatswain and his mate, 2 carpenters, 2 stewards, 2 cooks, 80 able-bodied seamen before the mast, and 10 boys. This fine ship was built by Mr. Donald McKay, of Boston, and notwithstanding her large tonnage, was loaded and despatched by her agents, Messrs. Grinnell, Minturn & Co., in thirty working days. She draws 21 feet of water -- a light draft, considering that she has 3 feet depth of keel. She is commanded by Capt. Laughlan McKay, a brother of her builder. Capt. McKay is a practical shipbuilder, has served in the U.S. Navy, and is the author of a valuable work upon Naval Architecture. He built the barque Odd Fellow, and commanded her nearly two years, and afterwards commanded the ship Jenny Lind, of this port, during her first voyage. He is not more than forty years of age, has a strong , vigorous constitution, is a man of dauntless, indomitable energy, and comprehends the duties of a ship in all their ramifications. With a good chance, we expect he will make the shortest passage on record.
