The 18th Improvement
Consists of introducing iron pillars into the ship's hold, between the centre
lines of the keelson and the beams, so as to prevent the beams from working up
and downwise, as they are prone to do in a heavy seas when ships are deeply
laden, and thus making the beams work at their ends, where they are fastened
to the sides of the ship.
