Whipstaff

Extract from Jean Nicot's dictionary of 1584.

Barre de temon, est vne piece de bois ronde de cinq pieds de long appliquée de bout sur ledit temon par vne piece de bois percée en laquelle iceluy temon entre & s'enferme, laquelle barre perce le gaillart & saut par dessus la hauteur de cinq pieds, par où le gouuernaile est regy, & manié.

ye Bittackle.

Is a Close Cupbord framed, and placed in the Steeridge before the Whip, or Tiller, whereon the Compas doth stand: Which is not fastned together with Iron Nailes, but woodden Pins, because that Iron would drawe the Compas, so that it would never stand true. Theis are to be soe contrived that they may Carry Candles or Lamps in them, to give light to the Compas so as it may dispeirse no Light, and yet to let any be seene about the Ship.

ye Helme.

Is that peece of Timber wch the Helmes man doth hold in his hand to Steere, and governe the Rudder by: and one end is made fast to the head of the Rudder, but soe as that it may be taken off. Though the Rudder be the cause of the Ships working, yet the Helme is the Instrument wch governes the Rudder, and therefore we impute it all to the Helme; as when we say ye Ship feeles ye Helme, or doth not Feele the Helme, that is, Will Work and be governed by the Helme, or not: for if a Ship be very fowle, or out of her Trym, or to deepe or too Light, many times she will not feele the Helme, but saile as if she had none. Port the Helme: Starboord ye Helme: Amid Ship, or right the Helme; Termes of Conding, to direct wch way the Steeres man should put the Helme: In smaller Ships, Vnder the rate of 500. Tun, they vse to put a Whip to ye other end of the Helme, and so Steere &z. governe the Helme by that.

Suck

When all the Water is Pumped out, and that the Pump doth draw Wind, we say She Sucks: also when a Ship doth Draw downe the Helme, and doth (as it were) Suck ye Whip Staff out of his hand at ye Helme: a Ship gripes when she doth thus: the reason may be either much Fowlenes; the Standing of her Masts too much aft; or that She may be out of her Trim.

Is that Staff which the Steeres man doth hold in his hand, whereby he governes the helme, and doth Port it over from one side to an other. It hath a Ring at one end, which is put over the end of the Helme, and soe comes through ye Rowle, vp into the Steeridge. In great Ships they are not vsed: for by reason of the Waight of the Rudder, and the Water which lies vpon it in fowle weather they are not able to governe the helme with a Whippe, because conveniently there can stand but one Man at the Whippe.

Quart de rond ou saloire. C'est une pièce de bois, en forme d'arc qui est dans la Saincte Barbé, sur laquelle est posé un taquet qui est lié à la barre du gouvernail pour la soutenir.
