Chariot of Fame

Medium clipper ship built in 1853 by Donald McKay, East Boston, MA. Dimensions 220'×43'×27'6" and tonnage 2050 34/95 tons old measurement.

1853 April: Launched at the shipyard of Donald McKay, East Boston, MA, for Enoch Train & Co., Boston, MA.
1854-1862: Captain Allen H. Knowles.
1854 January 11 - February 26: Sailed from Liverpool to Boston with a cargo valued at £ 100.000. Had to seek shelter in the harbour of Provincetown in a snowstorm from where she was later towed to Boston by R.B. Forbes.
1856 May 27: Sailed from New York to Acapulco in 145 days.
1858 January 7 - May 13: Sailed from New York to San Francisco in 126 days with a cargo of 3600 tons.
1859 April 3 - August 3: Sailed from New York to San Francisco in 117 days.
1859 September 22 - November 5: Sailed from San Francisco to Valparaiso in 44 days.
1860 March 10 - June 19: Sailed from Chincas Islands, Callao, to Baltimore with a cargo of guano at $15 per ton.
1860 December 27: Sailed from Baltimore to San Francisco in 143 days under command of Captain Hubbard.
1861 February 20 - July 11: Sailed from San Francisco to Liverpool in 141 days.
1862: Sold in London.
1868: Sold to Wilson & Chambers, Liverpool. Captain Kerr was given command of the vessel.
1869: Sold to J. Patton, South Shields.
1874: Her name is not listed in Lloyd's Register of Shipping.

It is said that she came to her end in January, 1876, being abandoned when bound from Chincha Islands to Cork. [Richard McKay]
