A steel barque built in 1888 by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg, as Yard No. 56. Dimensions 74,00×11,64×6,34 meters [244'5"×38'1"×20'8"] and 1442 GRT and 1403 NRT and 1326 tons under deck.

1888 December 13: Launched at the shipyard of Blohm & Voss, Hamburg, for F. Laeisz, Hamburg. Assigned the German signal RHJL.
1888: In command of Captain E.H. Hellwege.
1888: Sailed from the English Channel to Valparaiso in 72 days.
1888/89: Sailed from Iquique to the English Channel in 94 days.
1892-1899: In command of Captain H.A. Dehnardt.
1894: Sailed from Iquique to the English Channel 76 days.
1895: Sailed from Iquique to the English Channel in 67 days.
1895: Sailed from Lizard Point to Valparaiso in 62 days.
1900-1903: In command of Captain J. Schmidt.
1901: Sailed from Lizard Point to Valparaiso in 76 days.
1901: Sailed from Iquique to Lizard in 81 days.
1904-1905: In command of Captain J.W.T. Frömcke.
1906-1907: In command of Captain W. Reimers.
1908-1909: In command of Captain R. Dahm.
1907 April 4 -: Sailed from Lizard Point to Valparaiso in 71 days.
