Launched at the shipyard of Blohm & Voss, Hamburg, for F. Laeisz, Hamburg. Assigned the German signal RJHS.

Destroyed by fire in the South Atlantic. The crew left the ship in the boats and was picked up the day by the steam ship Earl of Carrick of Glasgow and brought to Rio de Janeiro.
