Persévérance

A four-masted steel barque built in 1896 by Forges et chanties de la Meditérranée, La Seyne. Dimensions: 98,19×13,88×7,72 meters [322'2"×45'7"×25'4"] and tonnage: 2990 GRT and 2415 NRT. Rigged with royal sails over double top and topgallant sails.

Launched at the shipyard of Forges et chanties de la Meditérranée, La Seyne, for Ant. Dom. Bordes et fils, Dunkuerque. Captain André.

Sailed from Chile to France in 74 days.
1898
Sailed from France to Chile in 71 days.
1910 March 1
Grounded in the Schelde but was refloated and repaired at Antwerp.
1917 September 24
Encountered the German submarine UC 63 at La Corunna on voyage from Iquique to St. Nazaire with 4000 tons of nitrate. Captain F. Béquet enaged the submarine with the barque's gun but had to abandon the ship after an action which lasted for an hour. The Persévérance was sunk by explosive charges by the Germans in position 44°22'N, 9°10'W. The crew was later saved by the British steamer Victoria and brought to Punta Delgada, the Azores.
