Most of the later full-rigged four-masted ships were re-rigged to barques before the end of their career. It is in many cases hard to determine if a certain ship was originally rigged as a ship or a barque. The various registers are not consistent in the classification of the four-masted ships and barques. The term often used in the American registers is shipentine.
Note that some of the early ships were converted from steam ships to sailing ships. For those ships two dates are given, the second being the date of the conversion to a four-masted ship or barque.
