Janet Cowan

A four-masted steel ship built in 1889 by Barclay, Curly & Co., Glasgow. Dimensions: 93,87×13,30×7,69 meters [308'0"×43'8"×25'3"] and tonnage: 2578 GRT and 2498 NRT.

Sistership to the same owner's fourmast ship Kelburn.

The Janet Cowan was named after the maiden name of the wife of the first owner.

1889 May: Launched at the shipyard of Barclay, Curly & Co., Glasgow, for R. Shankland & Co., Greenock. Captain A. McKay.
1895 December 31: Arrived off Cape Flattery in ballast and signalled for a pilot and a tug. Drifted ashore on the west coast of on Vancouver Island while waiting for the tug which was delayed due to it being a holiday. Seven men of the crew including the captain lost their lives in getting ashore.
